Life in Sydney…

I was reminded today (by a very good friend, “Trudy”) that my last blog was posted on March 1st. After hearing the “utter disappointment” in the tone of her voice, I decided that it was about time to get another one rolling! After all, I wouldn’t be able to call myself a true blogger if I left it at that, now would I?

Where to begin? The last time I left you, I had just arrived in Sydney – waiting the unexpected you could say. Well, that unexpected turned quickly into a beautiful and familiar routine that both Krysten and I fell comfortably into.

Let me first tell you about the university and my classes.

The University of Sydney is absolutely breath taking! For all of you “Harry Potter” fans out there – you would fall in love. It is the Australian version of Hogwarts. I feel like I should be wearing a cape to class and should join the “quidditch” team. (According to my new Aussie friend and neighbour Elle, I have taken this analogy too far!).

As far as school goes, let’s just say that we are here for the experience! Our schedule for the week consists of having classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I know… sounds like a very hard life doesn’t it?! We are taking two mandatory courses – related to communications – and two electives, which are tons of fun. The one course is called “Outdoor Education” and it is possibly one of the best courses I’ve ever taken! This past weekend we took a beautiful 8 km walk through The Royal National Park, swam in the ocean as well as the beautiful man made fresh water “lakes” as one of the requirements to pass this course! The professor is from New Zealand, and he is amazing. For all of you who are considering doing an exchange abroad, I would strongly recommend it!

As far as the night life and city life goes, Sydney is incredible! At first I was overwhelmed by its size and “city like” feel to it, however, it didn’t take me long to grow accustom to its busy streets and amazing markets! Just the other night we went for Korean food and then spent our Friday night walking through the extremely well-lit and busy Chinese night market. The amount of “hello kitty” apparel and hilarious miscellaneous knick-knacks they had was unbelievable. Bright colours everywhere! As we continued to walk a little further – past the next yelling vendour – we encountered a runway full of “fake” designer products. Prada! Jimmy Choo! Gucci! D&G! Fendi! I felt right at home. To end the eventful evening, as a treat to myself, I bought a fake “Tiffany’s” ring. A ring where in the “real world” has been discontinued. The beauty of “discount” shopping!

Last but not least, I would like to share a little bit of information about my new “home away from home”, which is called the International House at the University of Sydney. This “house” is filled with students from all around the world. And when I say all around the world, I really mean it! Anywhere from North America to Asia, to South Africa, to Indonesia, to New Zealand, or to a little island off Dubai. Almost anywhere in the world, there is most likely a representative from that country staying at the International House! It is absolutely fascinating to learn about someone’s culture and the history of their home country. I have met several friends here and look forward to visiting them later on in life.

The things that I’ve learnt, and the moments I’ve experienced so far, are things that cannot be taught in a classroom or in an office back home.

When you think of it really, it is life long knowledge.

I am so fortunate to be here, and I look forward to telling you more!

Next stop, New Zealand on Friday, March 26th –  April 12th.
